Henry III had no son and was unlikely ever to have one. This left Henry of Navarre as heir, thereby raising the spectre that the next king of France might be a heretic. In September 1584 Henry duke of Guise and his brothers the duke of Mayenne and the Cardinal of Guise met at Nancy and founded league to keep Navarre off the throne. Phillip II signed a treaty with the new League, and military operations began at once. The King's bodyguards immediately threw themselves at Henry of Navarre's feet and swore fealty to him. The Catholic League responded by proclaiming Cardinal de Bourbon the true king of France. But Henry suprised everyone by abjuring Protestantism. Paris soon surrendered and his legitimacy soared.
